How to get a TIN in the Philippines
A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is issued by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and is required for employment, business, and many financial and government transactions. Getting a TIN is free, and the right BIR form depends on your situation. This checker points you to the correct form and steps, whether you're employed, self-employed, or just need a TIN for a one-time transaction.
Which BIR form do you need?
- Form 1902 — employees earning purely compensation income; your employer usually files it.
- Form 1901 — self-employed individuals, professionals, and mixed-income earners.
- Form 1904 — those with no income or who need a TIN for a one-time transaction (under EO 98), such as opening a bank account.
One TIN per person — for life
By law you may have only one TIN, and it stays with you permanently across jobs and changes in status. Deliberately obtaining more than one TIN is penalized. If you've ever been employed or transacted with the BIR, you probably already have a TIN — verify it rather than applying again.
Is registering a TIN really free?
Yes — the TIN itself costs nothing. However, registering a business or profession (Form 1901) involves an annual registration process and the obligation to keep books and issue official receipts or invoices. A plain employee or one-time TIN has no such cost.
FAQ
Can I get a TIN online?
Yes. The BIR's Online Registration and Update System (ORUS) lets many applicants register or verify a TIN online, though some cases still go through the Revenue District Office (RDO).
I forgot my TIN — what do I do?
Don't apply for a new one. Verify your existing TIN through the BIR (ORUS, the BIR hotline, or your RDO). A second TIN creates legal and tax problems.
Which RDO handles my registration?
Generally the RDO covering your residence or business address. ORUS and the BIR can help you identify the correct RDO if you're unsure.
