How many pizzas should you order?
The simple rule caterers use is about three slices per person for an average appetite. Multiply your guest count by slices per person, divide by the number of slices per pizza, and round up. This calculator does that for you and even tells you how many leftover slices you'll have, so nobody goes hungry and you don't massively over-order.
The slices-per-person guide
- Light (2 slices) — kids, lighter eaters, or when there's other food.
- Average (3 slices) — the standard assumption for a mixed group.
- Hungry (4 slices) — teens, athletes, or pizza as the only dish.
- Very hungry (5 slices) — big appetites and no sides.
Pizza sizes and slice counts
Slice counts vary by pizzeria, but a common guide is 6 slices for a small, 8 for a medium, 10 for a large, and 12 for an extra-large. Bigger pizzas are usually better value per slice, so for large groups, fewer big pizzas often beat many small ones. Pick the size that matches what your pizzeria offers for the most accurate count.
Tips for ordering for a crowd
- Order a little extra — leftovers keep, but running out is awkward.
- Get variety: a safe option like cheese or pepperoni plus one or two specialty pies.
- Account for sides; wings, salad, and breadsticks reduce how many slices people eat.
FAQ
How many people does one pizza feed?
At 3 slices per person, a medium (8 slices) feeds about 2–3 people and a large (10 slices) about 3–4. Use the calculator to scale this to your exact group.
Should I round up or down?
Always round up — it's better to have a few leftover slices than to come up short. This calculator rounds up automatically.
What about kids?
Children usually eat less, so the "light" appetite setting (2 slices) is a good fit for a group of kids or a mix that includes them.
